Email marketing is a curious mix of art and science. There are lots of things to measure and evaluate, but email design still retains an element of intangible creativity that you can't (yet) mimic with computer software.

Which is not to say there aren't rules and guidelines when it comes to designing emails that get people to respond with a click, tick or credit card. David Baker has a number of relevant suggestions.
