Here's a kind blogger who did some spadework so you don't have to. ExactTarget's R.J.Talyor lists some of the important email clients, email-reading devices and webmail services, along with an estimate of how long the subject line displays are in each.
Displayed subject line lengths vary from 10 characters (new Blackberry) to 124 (Outlook bottom preview pane). You'll also find some recommendations on writing those all-important words.
