If you know anyone who thinks randomly gathering addresses to put on an email list is a good thing, point them to this piece by Jordan Ayan explaining why it's a big no, no.Or just mention that it's often illegal, unethical and supports a poor lifestyle. Unless they're the sort who like to skulk in cellars hoping nobody knocks with an arrest warrant.
Jordan puts it a little more politely than that, but the message is similar.
