How do spammers get people to respond to their email scams? That was the topic of a recent study commissioned by McAfee. The results are fascinating and very readable.The author (James Blascovich, PhD) examines the basic reader motivations that spammers manipulate. Then he reveals how spammers attempt to communicate legitimacy to smooth the behavioral path that leads to the desired action.
Some of the challenges for the spammer apply equally to legitimate email senders trying to get through to people who actually requested and want the email. So there's insight in there for ethical marketers and anti-spam activists alike.
