Hi Mary,

I don't think you can change Gmail to make the font smaller in the displayed subject line, but big in the emails themselves. Try this link though for some helpful tips.

How do I decrease the size of my font in my Gmail subject line? (I want to leave the large font the way it is, in my email messages though). I can't read very much of the subject line, so therefore have to open every single email to read it, before I delete it. I would much prefer to read more of the email content in the subject line, and therefore just delete emails without having to open them all, which is very time consuming. Please help! Thank you.

Thanks Brendan. It annoys me that it's such a simple concept. It was staring me in the face for years but I only bothered to think about it myself after spotting a typo in one of my own subject lines. Except it wasn't a typo, just an unfortunate cutoff point on a Yahoo display.

Bravo, Mark! A fellow analyst and myself were scouring the Net for an article like this last week...I guess we just went looking too early! BTW, LOVE the spreadsheet tool. Sorry for the sappy comment, but I'm excited :)

Absolutely Andrew. I believe when we recommend "short" subject lines that what we're really recommending is, like you say, putting the most important stuff near the front. Some describe it as frontloading the subject.

This would also be an argument in favor of a) not stressing out as much about subject line length as long as you b) lead off the subject line with the most important word(s).
